What Is UL 1741?
UL 1741 is the US safety standard for inverters, converters, and controllers used in distributed energy resources (DER). For plug-in balcony solar, the critical sub-standard is UL 1741 SA (Supplement A) — also known as IEEE 1547-2018 and UL 1741 SB for newer revisions.
UL 1741 SA-certified microinverters can automatically disconnect from the grid during outages (anti-islanding), adjust power output based on grid conditions, and meet utility interconnection requirements. See state legality guide and utility company rules.
Why It Matters for Plug-In Solar
- Grid safety: Prevents backfeeding power to de-energized lines during outages
- Utility approval: Most utilities require UL 1741 listing for interconnection
- Insurance: Non-certified equipment may void homeowner's insurance coverage
- Code compliance: NEC Article 690 references UL-listed equipment for PV systems
- Resale value: Certified systems are easier to transfer and document
UL 1741 SA vs Other Standards
| Standard | Applies To | Plug-In Solar? |
|---|---|---|
| UL 1741 SA/SB | Grid-tie microinverters | Yes — required |
| UL 1741 (base) | Off-grid inverters | No — not for grid export |
| No UL listing | Import/generic inverters | Avoid — illegal in most areas |
How to Verify Certification
- Check product listing for "UL 1741 SA" or "UL 1741 SB" on the inverter label
- Search UL Product iQ database (productiq.ul.com) for the model number
- Verify the manufacturer name matches (e.g., PluggedSolar, Enphase, Hoymiles)
- Ask your utility if they maintain an approved equipment list
- Avoid generic Amazon inverters without clear UL documentation
Certified Plug-and-Play Kits
PluggedSolar 800W and 1.8KW kits include UL 1741-listed micro grid-tie inverters designed for standard 120V outlet connection. These are the safest choice for US plug-in solar. See best plug-and-play kits.
Portable power stations (EcoFlow DELTA, etc.) are not UL 1741 grid-tie devices — they store energy in batteries, not export to the grid. See grid-tied vs off-grid.
Permits Still Required
UL certification does not replace permits or utility registration. See permits & interconnection guide.
